What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Mixed Martial Arts, also referred to as MMA, is a fighting sport where different styles of combat are used interchangeably against an opponent in mutual combat.

Popularized in the United States by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), fighters combine Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Wrestling and many other martial arts for fast-paced and exciting fights. Now a mainstream sport found on cable stations and pay per view events.

Q&A about MMA with Professor Rob….

1) How did you get started training mixed martial arts?

I recognized early in my martial arts experience that each martial art has its strengths and weaknesses. I was greatly influenced by my instructors to embrace martial arts and learn from each experience.

I was exposed to the concepts of mixed martial arts early in my career in the martial arts by the Gracie Family, the very early days of the UFC, and my teachers and instructors.

2) How has training mixed martial arts influenced the rest of your training/teaching?

My philosophy and methodology for self-defense is to be well rounded in the arts. I personally enjoy punching, kicking, grappling from the feet, and from the ground. I continue to train, seek out instruction from others and most importantly practice daily to be more prepared for life.

3) How is MMA different from the other martial arts you teach?

Mixed Martial Arts is the combination of all the arts that we train at Absolute MMA. Once you have the experience of each martial art, you’ll be more prepared for understanding and contributing to our MMA team practice.

Every one of our MMA athletes and champions has come up through our system and continues to train consistently

4) How does someone start training mixed martial arts?

The first step in starting to train in mixed martial arts is to find a school near you that teaches what you are looking for.

I always suggest trying a few classes, sometimes you’ll find a free week trial as we have at Absolute, but even it costs you a few bucks it’s worth it.

It gives you a chance to get to know the instructors, the members of the school, and make a decision based on your experience.

5) Can anyone do mixed martial arts?

I believe that training in any martial art is for everyone, at any age and any gender. Some will train in the mixed martial arts and some will compete or fight in the martial arts, and some won’t and that’s ok too. As I’ve stated before its my philosophy to be well rounded and prepared to fight in all ranges.
